VOGUE - The Best Rock Star Weddings of All Time By Alex Frank

The Best Rock Star Weddings of All Time

VOGUE

Rock stars are probably not the first people who come to mind when you think “wedded bliss.” But of course, marriage and weddings are different things, and most of your favorite frontmen and frontwomen have taken colorful trips down the aisle (and sometimes two or three). Rock excess has created some pretty iconic wedding moments, ranging from the outrageous (Kurt Cobain in pajamas), to the cool (Mick and Bianca in matching white suits), to the downright elegant (no platform shoes in sight, David Bowie got all gussied-up in black tie to wed Iman). Here, a roundup of our favorite rock star ceremonies.

Elvis and Priscilla Presley

Elvis and Priscilla got married at the height of the sixties big-hair days (1967 to be exact), and the 21-year-old bride’s bouffant, complemented by her deep black eyeliner, surely goes down in history as one of the grandest and grooviest wedding dos of all time.

John Cale and Betsey Johnson

When the Velvet Underground cofounder married wacky fashion designer Betsey Johnson in front of their entire crew of downtown New York Warhol royalty, they did 1968 underground wedding style right: she in casual but chic bright red, he with a mop of Beatles hair.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono

John and Yoko’s wedding look reflected their penchant for wearing all white, and, ever the exhibitionists, a photo of their 1969 nuptials ended up on the front cover of their experimental joint record, The Wedding Album.

Paul and Linda McCartney
Paul and Linda are the picture of bohemian wedded bliss at their 1969 no-frills wedding at the county register. When the love runs that deep, what else do you need but an orange peacoat and some petals in your hair?

Bianca and Mick Jagger

When you’re the coolest couple on earth, you can do wedding style however you please. Bianca and Mick chose matching suits for their 1971 trip down the aisle in—where else?—St.-Tropez.

David Bowie and Iman

With his Thin White Duke days behind him, David Bowie went full-on traditional for his 1991 Swiss wedding to supermodel Iman. She wore classic white, flowing tresses, and arm-length gloves, while he looks like the groom figurine on top of the wedding cake in his black tux.

Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love

If you thought the icons of grunge would get married in something conventional, you thought wrong. Is there a wedding look more befitting the king and queen of Gen X slackerdom than pajamas and a vintage costume?

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale

If the thought of veering from classic white fills some brides-to-be with trepidation, Gwen Stefani had no stage fright when she went full-on pink ombre dip dye for her 2002 wedding to fellow rock star Gavin Rossdale of Bush.
